| | | 22" Native American Buffalo Head Pipe | The total length of this Large Ceremonial Buffalo Head (Elbow Style) Effigy Pipe is 22-5/8" long. It is made out of Sacred Catlinite, which is commonly referred to by many as pipestone. Catlinite has been used for centuries by Native Americans to make ceremonial pipes and other items. It is a red stone that is believed to have originated from the blood of Native American ancestors.
The pipe bowl measures 5-5/8" long and is 3-7/8" tall. The pipe depicts a large Buffalo Head. It is very intricately carved with special attention being given to the nose, mouth, ears, and eyes and horns.
This pipe and stem was crafted by Sisseton native: Many Lightnings
The piece of stone used for the pipe was a nice dark red piece with a noticeable lighter color on the back side of the pipe. There is several small spots or "stars" that can be found in the pipe.
The stem is made of Pine and is 17-7/8" long. It has not been decorated in any way. (other than the artist burning the exterior of the wood) This allows the eventual caretaker to decorate it in the way they see most fit.
